352nd ACTIVITY RECORDED WITH GARMIN EDGE 1000; ALSO RECORDED WITH GARMIN EDGE 705 AT https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/2948910554.
THIS WAS A REALLY LONG DAY WITH A BUNCH OF REALLY TOUGH CLIMBS in pretty warm weather (80s).
The first 54.5 miles of this route were mapped at https://ridewithgps.com/routes/28373618; the rest of the ride was “adlibbed” based on that route, but deleting Harbor Island & Shelter Island, adding another loop down & up Mt. Soledad, then adding a little extra credit at the end of the ride to get to 7,000' total ascent.
First time for this route.
Park/start/finish at the Solana Beach Amtrak Station parking lot north end, 441 N Cedros Ave, Solana Beach, CA 92075 (see https://goo.gl/maps/2b3HmT2cWJs).
Fern Kissel (for the first 62.6 miles, then back up the coast to Solana Beach) & JK.
Lap 1: Solana Beach south along coast past Del Mar Powerhouse Park (FIRST TIME IN YEARS), up the “inside Torrey,” south down Gilman Dr & Rose Creek Bike Path to Garnet Ave.
Up Mt. Soledad via Donaldson Dr, Emerald St/Blom St loop, Beryl St, Lamont St/Soledad Rd, Parkview/Bahia/Thunderbird loop (Fern’s 1st time), Sagebrush Rd, Soledad Mtn Rd, La Jolla Scenic Dr. S. (“LJSDS”) to the cross.
Down Cardeno Dr/Fanuel St to Felspar St & west to Cass St
Up Cass St, Linda Rosa Ave, etc. to the cross.
Down Soledad Mtn Rd, south past Mission Bay, east to circle the Presidio Park loop, then west on the Ocean Beach (“OB”) Bike Path to OB, south to Sunset Cliffs, up Hill St (STEEP!) to Catalina Blvd., south through Fort Rosecrans National Cemetary, & down to the Point Loma Tide Pools for lunch.
Up from the tide pools to circle the old lighthouse.
Lap 2: Down Cabrillo Memorial Dr/Catalina Blvd to Jensen’s Foods at Talbot St for water & Gatorade.
THEN WE LEFT THE PLANNED ROUTE & … Continued NE down Catalina Blvd, NW on Nimitz Blvd back to the OB bike path & back to Mission Bay via Pacific Hwy, then around the bay to the Rose Creek Bike Path where Fern headed back up the coast to Solana Beach.
JK continued west to/around Crown Point (ON THE BIKE PATH; FIRST/LAST TIME – TOO CROWDED WITH PEDESTRIANS, DOGS, STROLLERS, SCOOTERS, CASUAL CYCLISTS, ETC.), NE through Pacific Beach, through Bird Rock, & to La Jolla High School via the “La Jolla Bike Path” (FIRST TIME IN MANY YEARS; PRETTY PRIMITIVE HARD-PACK DIRT SECTIONS, PEDESTRIANS, CASUAL CYCLISTS).
Up Mt. Soledad via Muirlands Vista Way/Muirlands Dr, Solymar Dr, Newkirk Dr/Havenhurst Dr/Terryhill Dr, Inspiration Dr, El Camino Del Teatro, & LJSDS to the cross.
DOWN to Pacific Beach via LJSDS, Rutgers Rd/Moonlight Ln, Candlelight Dr, Van Nuys St, Cass St to Felspar St (FIRST TIME TO GO DOWNHILL ON THIS ROUTE).
UP Mission Blvd/La Jolla Mesa Dr (FIRST TIME IN YEARS), & LJSDS to the cross.
Down Nautilus St. to Windansea & around La Jolla.
Up “Two Hidden Bridges,” but only to Hillside Dr, then down to Torrey Pines Rd & north on La Jolla Shores Dr (FIRST TIME IN YEARS). Then up Calle Del Oro/Prestwick Dr/Dunaway Dr (FIRST TIME; 2-3 SECTIONS AT 11-12% GRADE) to Torrey Pines Rd.
North up the coast to Del Mar, then north on Jimmy Durante Blvd (FIRST TIME IN MANY YEARS), west on Via De La Valle to Camino Del Mar/Coast Hwy 101, & north back to Lomas Santa Fe.
(I needed about 200' of ascent to get to 7,000 for the day, so I headed up, around, over, down, and back up Lomas Santa Fe and Nardo Ave before heading back to the car.)

Best format for turn-by-turn directions on modern Garmin Edge Devices
Best format for turn by turn directions on Edge 500, 510. Will provide true turn by turn navigation on Edge 800, 810, 1000, Touring including custom cue entries. Great for training when we release those features. Not currently optimal for Virtual Partner.
Useful for uploading your activity to another service, keeping records on your own computer etc.
Useful for any GPS unit. Contains no cuesheet entries, only track information (breadcrumb trail). Will provide turn by turn directions (true navigation) on the Edge 705/800/810/1000/Touring, but will not have any custom cues. Works great for Mio Cyclo. Find GPS specific help in our help system.
Estimated Time shows a prediction of how long it would take you to ride a given route. This number is based on your recent riding history, and represents an estimate of moving time. Each time you upload a new ride, your Estimated Time profile will adjust to reflect your most recent riding. Only rides exceeding 10 miles (16 km) will affect these estimates.
