Overcast clouds, 58°F, Feels like 57°F, Humidity 88%, Wind 3mph from NNW - by Klimat --- 125 miles of beautiful roads. (13.5 new miles according to Wandrer.) Weather not as nice. 50 miles good, 50 miles awful. 25 miles ok. Going up Brandon Gap was not bad. So much easier when it’s the first and only Gap instead of #4. At the top, it started pouring. By the time I got to Bristol and stopped for lunch my hands were so cold I couldn’t unlatch my bag or take my gloves off. I ran my gloved hands under hot water until they warmed up. It stopped raining for the last 25 miles but I couldn’t enjoy it because I just wanted to finish. Texas Hill Rd was a brutal climb towards the end of the ride. Definitely the hardest hill of the day. Some people walked. Dugway Rd partially made up for Texas Hill. Dugan was downhill the whole way and went past the dramatic Huntington Gorge. By the end I was covered with mud and my bike was in bad shape. The rear brake pad was worn down to nothing and I couldn’t upshift into harder gears. I had to get off the bike and move the derailleur by hand. So glad to finish, put on dry clothes and get in a warm car. I got back to The Nest to watch the Kentucky Derby and drink a Foam Galaxie 500. Now I will pass out. Btw - I stopped at Minifactory in Bristol for lunch around 1pm. The Frijoles with 2 fried eggs and an add on of pork bellies and sourdough bread was fantastic (and fantastically overpriced at 17+7+2). I was bummed they didn’t have drip coffee. They close at 4 and said if they brewed a pot, most of it would go to waste. I had to settle for an Americano. I’ve stopped at Minifactory before for coffee and a pastry.
