Interesting route that provides some minor challenges and beautiful scenery. Route starts in Free Union working your way on quiet back road of both paved tarmac and gravel to Sugar Hollow Reservoir. From the reservoir, pedal your way rambling along the North Fork Moorman's River Trail for 3 or 4 miles. It will require 6 very short hike a bike sections (1 or 2 minutes kinda thing) and around 10 stream crossings where you can try to dance across rocks or just enjoy a nice refreshing cool walk thru the Moorman's river. The trail is "ridable" but you should have some good mtb skills to navigate the rockier stuff. This will then meet up with Black Gap Rock Road (its private property but they allow use of the road as long as you stay... on the road. It is a fairly nice double track road that is ridable (2 miles). That will run into North Fork Moorman's River road (2 miles) to take you to the Skyline Drive. The nice thing is this climb gets easier to ride as you get further along. After rambling up to the Skyline Drive you will be rewarded with a smooth cruise and numerous views for the next 13 miles. There is a place on the Skyline Drive to resupply with water/food at Loft Mountain Wayside in about 8 miles. Or you can do as I did and filter water at the last stream crossing on your way up (though with so many stream crossings its hard to know which is the last one). At Simmons Gap hang a right onto the Forestry Station rd and stay right onto the old double track Fire road. Cruise down that for a mile'ish to Simmons Gap road. It's a twisty gravel decent sure to test your wits. After that decent you will roll along quiet roads in the hollows until you reach your final climb up over Fox Mountain via a nice gravel road. And then you can slow roll back to Free Union reminiscing about your mini adventure.
Things to note:
Besides the 13 miles on the Skyline Drive it was more gravel roads than anticipated. Which was great but if I was to do it again I'd probably roll my 2" tires. My 42mm worked and I enjoyed the ride but I like comfort and big tires = more comfort. Besides I surely spent more time on dirt then tarmac for this ride.
Tires = 42mm Specialized Pathfinders (measured to 43.5 on my rims)
Stem = Vecnum suspension
Seatpost = Eesilk 20mm suspension
Gearing = 46/30 with 11/36
