Orcas Island has some of the most fun road biking in Western Washington. Take the early ferry from Anacortes to Orcas Island or stay overnight. It’s easy to park your car in Anacortes and ride bikes onto the ferry. The roads around the island are fun rollercoaster rides with surprising sights at every turn. Grab food and supplies in East Sound. The ride up Mt Consitution is relentlessness but manageable. It’s best to hit the roads early in the day and always let ferry traffic have the right of way. Also worth potentially worth avoiding this ride Memorial Day thru Labor Day, the peak summer tourism human migration to the San Juan Islands. The roads are smooth yet somewhat narrow and good biker traffic awareness is required at all times. There is limited space for bikers on most roads and traffic should be considered carefully. Island drivers might be used to bikers but that doesn’t mean you should be a biker in the way. Pull over on the many pullout opportunities and let traffic around. There are many excellent ascents and descents to be had on Orcas Island and the runs are memorable. But it’s not all perfect for road bikers as vehicle traffic is a concern on generally narrow pavement. Good bike and road signage throughout the island make this a friendly visit. People are wonderful here and you’ll see “be kind” road signs among other gentle reminders that this is the land of living the dream. Orcas has a fantastic local community, people are friendly, and several bike stores, restaurants, and grocery stores are available for support.
