Trainer vs Power Meter

This test is to measure the difference between the output of a Tacx Trainer and the output of a Power Meter like for instance Power Pedals. Because the power of a Tacx Trainer is measured behind the crank, chain and cassette there should always be a difference in the output that comes directly from the pedals. But this test is to see what the difference is.We would recommend you to first complete calibration of the Power Meter after a 15 minutes warmup, make sure that chain and cassette is clean or new. The actual test is ideally done in a 34/19 gearing and 85 RPM. Do not shift gears in the test, but focus on the 85 RPM for all blocks. The test always comes back to easy blocks of 2 minutes of 80 Watts. And from then it varies from 150 Watts up to 300 Watts and all blocks last for 2 minutes. Try to stay on 85 RPM for all the blocks to get the best result.!! check if the latest firmware is installed on the Tacx Trainer by using that Tacx Training App !!Pre-actions:1. Connect the Power meter with the App of the manufacturer and check if the latest software of the Power meter is installed2. Make sure the chain on your bike is clean or new and make sure the cassette is clean or new3. Do a 15-minute warmup and check everything is working correctly and there are no sound/rattling/hopping cogs issues with the chain and cassette and that the pedals are well tightened to the crank4. After finishing the warmup set the gearings to something like 50/23 or 34/19 and leave it in this position. The Test:1. Connect the power meter with the Garmin Edge (Menu, Sensors, Add Sensor) then choose Settings and calibrate the Power Meter with the Edge. Or connect this to another recording device.2. Connect the Trainer with the Tacx Training App or Desktop app and when possible calibrate the Trainer in the Tacx Training App (follow the on-screen instructions). Please note, NEO (2T) and Neo Bike units don’t require calibration3. Start this training and push the record button on the Garmin Edge (

Best format for turn-by-turn directions on modern Garmin Edge Devices

  • TCX Course

Best format for turn by turn directions on Edge 500, 510. Will provide true turn by turn navigation on Edge 800, 810, 1000, Touring including custom cue entries. Great for training when we release those features. Not currently optimal for Virtual Partner.

  • TCX History

Useful for uploading your activity to another service, keeping records on your own computer etc.

  • GPX Track (.gpx)
