My first P2P ride! Another bucket list ride completed. Great weather and a tailwind for most of the ride. Thunderstorms moved through at 3:30 AM, but it was clearing by 6:20 AM when we pushed off. It was humid, and the roads were a little wet, but it was in the high 60's to start. Started with Doug McCartney and Forrest Hodgkins, and connected with Scott Chapman and Barry Greenberg at the Sagamore Bridge. Rode mostly as a four- to five-some for the rest of the ride. We had set what felt like a fast pace, but it was great when we got off the main roads and wound through the oak and pine forested roads. There was a nice rest stop at Rock Harbor in Orleans (mile 54.3). Having never driven or ridden to P-town, it was amazing how steep some of the hills are coming into Wellfleet and Truro, and they really kill because my legs were tired by mile 65. The only stiff headwind we had was in the last few miles coming into P-town, so I was thankful we didn't have that for the entire ride. It was totally sunny for the last half of the ride. It's hard to imagine how the ride could have been any better.
The stop at the end had abundant sodas and beers, which was a great way to rehydrate. Had a nice lunch at a Portuguese restaurant on the main square, The Mayflower, with a great Portuguese kale soup and Portuguese baked Scrod. We had ice cream nearby. We connected with Kathryn Oleary, Pat Schindler and her friend Cindy (from Newton) who had ridden together. We boarded the ferry at 2:45pm and were back in Plymouth by about 4pm.
What a spectacular day to play hooky.
Note: the average speed includes walking the bike across the Sagamore Bridge.
