Closing out the road/tri season today was the last road race monument, Il Lombardia, and the Ironman Worlds in Kona. Cyclocross season is just starting, though, and all the kool kids are riding gravel. I put new Schwalbe Marathons on a set of Vision Team 30s, mounted those on my Tricross and set out in search of gravel. I found mostly mud instead, thanks to our wet Fall. Marlatt Road was OK, but 48th street was just a mudhole. I had intended to loop down to Keats and come home on Anderson, but discretion being the better part of valor, I settled for an out-and-back. It was a bit warmer than forecast, reaching 60F, with South winds around 12 with occasional gusts. I wore the PI black-and-white poly long sleeve jersey and Canari tights. The tights may have been just a touch too much; I might have been OK in bib shorts. The wheels and tires worked fine. I started, knowingly, with too much pressure at 70 psi. The first mile of gravel convinced me to go down to 60 psi. That worked OK, but I suspect going lower is called for. The Schwalbe's are nominally 35 mm wide, but measure 37.4 mm on the bike.
