My knee started hurting after the first climb of the day. I was going pretty slow up some of the longest/steepest climbs I've ever done. The guys I was riding with would drop me on the climbs. The only way to keep up with them was to not stop between the controls (like when they stopped to pick blackberries). On the namesake of the ride, King Ridge, I was all alone for about 30miles of steep ups and downs. It was both the high point and the low point of the ride for me: amazingly beautiful up there but I was hurting, hot and tired. Yes, it was still fun!
After the King Ridge section I caught up to the others at the market in Cazadero. That's where I threw in the towel on the ride. I relaxed for a while and iced my knee. Getting home from there was another adventure in itself. I managed to soft-pedal to Petaluma (Denny's never tasted so good and the staff there know us and treat us really well). Jenny, the "Day of Ride Contact" knew I was DNF'ing and found another couple riders that were in Guernville that could give me a ride back to the city. I had to spend a couple hours at Denny's waiting for them. I could not stay awake after my Grand Slam breakfast with Vanilla Shake so I went out behind the restaurant, found a nice soft concrete slab, warmed by the soft whir of an AC condenser fan, and promptly fell asleep. Shane, Thomas and Gabrielle found me and loaded me and my bike into their minivan and gave me a ride back to the GGBridge Plaza (thanks again, guys!) where Stacy picked me up. Sort of. There was some kind of construction going on and the entrance to the plaza from 19th Avenue was closed. So I met Stacy on the South side of the Presidio. That's the first time, and hopefully the last, that I've had to ask her for a ride home. I was home and in bed at about 1:30 this morning. What a day/night!
