The Old Post to Ridge Loop is the best “Intermediate” series of trails I’ve found so far in Sedona and looks to be the best ride to start the BAS Special Even in March. It starts with a sometimes easy sometimes grueling 1.5 mile climb on the Old Post Trail until it becomes a flowy up and down trail mostly climbing until you reach the the Ridge Tr. After a mixture of rolling hills you start another difficult climb but after reaching the top at 4,400’ you’ll be treated to some incredible views in every direction including Thunder Mtn, Twin Buttes and Cathedral Rock. From the peak the downhill is “mostly” ridable until near the end where you find a short but very difficult rocky section. From there you continue on to the Secret Slick Rock Trail for some fun wide open slick rock riding and beautiful views of Cathedral Rock and other red rock. This is an amazing place to spend some time and big attraction for local photographers. When I returned later in the day to shoot some pictures there was a professional photographer taking pictures of a bride and groom along with their wedding party. After they left several other photographers showed up to shoot pictures of Cathedral Rock and the sunset.
Leaving Secret Slick Rock we continue on the Ridge Trail to Ramshead Trail for mostly downhill or flatish with only a few short climbs back to the Old Post Trail and then downhill back to the trailhead.
Overview:
6.7 miles and 763’ of climbing with some strenuous climbs. Like every series of trails I’ve ridden in Sedona there are several hike-a-bike sections climbing and descending. Beautiful views of the Sedona red rock buttes and landscape.
For additional fun I added a 1 mile climb up the Herkenham Trail followed by a fun sometimes technical sometimes flowy downhill on Scorpion Trail for a total of 12 miles and 1,367’ vertical.
