I'm here to eat all your croissants!
After last week's epicness, Bob suggested doing something less epic. I considered riding from home to avoid driving but I really didn't want to deal with the headwind heading back up Cañada. It was supposed to be a tailwind back to Bob's but they lied. Even when it for sure should've been a tailwind, we got headwinds! LAME!
We were not in sync today for some reason. Sonny was climbing too fast and Bob might not have fully recovered from last weekend and was getting dropped. But then on the flats, Sonny was getting dropped and Bob was flying ahead.
My plan had been to torch the climbs but in the end I just took it easy and hung out with everyone. I sprinted a bunch of the shorter climbs instead.
We stopped for a bathroom break in Woodside and I saw this shape gliding down the road towards us. When I first saw it out of the corner of my eye, I thought it was a turkey. It was a semi-deflated T-Rex mylar balloon. Hilariously, it kept coming for us until it got caught in Sonny's wheel.
It was looking like a pretty good marine layer blanketing the ridge but climbing Kings, it was sunny the whole way up. It wasn't until we got to the top that there was a bit of the mist/fog.
I brought arm warmers but meant to bring a jacket or vest for the coast and forgot. Descending Tunitas, it was wet and cold and I was regretting forgetting. Still, it's not like I put on arm warmers either.
On the way down, I caught up to and rode with Jen Tavé who was on her way to the Bike Hut for the Bike Hut Classic ceremonies. She won her age group. Congrats!
Someone dropped a banana on the road which Bob thought was a banana slug from afar. That would've been a huge slug.
On the way up Kings, these three Porsches very patiently waited to pass us. Yay! But they parked themselves at the bottom of the steep section of Tunitas in the blind corner to take photos. BOO!!! That was super dumb, especially given the wet conditions. Luckily there was someone climbing who warned me.
On the turn up Lobitos Creek, a group of Western Wheelers had just turn on to it from climbing up Tunitas. The blocked Sonny completely and he lost all his momentum to roller coaster up the climb. I got lucky and had a gap and sprinted up 2/3 of the climb.
Once we got up to the top of Lobitos Creek, it was really warm despite a layer of clouds. It was mostly warm with patches of cold.
I don't know what's going on with me and bugs lately but as I got to the steep part of the Lobitos Creek descent, a bug went smacking into my right ear and it must of got knocked out because it just stay in there. I was trying to brake for the corner and get rid of the bug from my ear at the same time.
I was hoping it would be warm at Dad's but it was windy and our table was in the shade so we were all kind of cold by the time we left.
Bob was feeling great so we just cruised all the way down Hwy 1 to Tunitas Creek. The tailwind was great. It would've been great to ride the tailwind all the way down to Gilroy and then train back.
Instead we climbed Tunitas slowly. Descending Kings was great though. I waited until there were no cars and I had a clean run.
