On this date in 1839, the French government presented the daguerreotype process "free to the world" as a gift, having compensated Louis Daguerre in the form of lifetime pensions to Daguerre and to Isidore Niépce, the son and heir of Nicéphore Niépce, who had worked with Dauguerre on the process.
The daguerreotype was almost completely superseded by 1856 with new, less expensive processes, such as ambrotype (collodion process), that yield more readily viewable images. There has been a revival of the daguerreotype since the late 20th century by a small number of photographers interested in making artistic use of early photographic processes.

Today I joined the Santa Cruz County Cycling Club for the A ride. I don't usually join A rides, but the route chosen today looked easier than the usual A ride, at 39 miles and 2,610 feet ascent. Last night, the ride leader emailed to announce that we would reverse the route. I didn't hear that until just before the start, but I was able to reverse the route in the RideWithGPS app on my phone just before we rolled out.
There were nine A riders today, if I remember. I started out falling behind the others only slowly, and was able to catch up when they stopped at the Corralitos Market. After that, they pulled ahead again, and I didn't seem them at the finish.
The whole ride felt good, but a little harder than I expected. Maybe moving the big climb to the first half of the route, together with somewhat warmer temperatures than usual, made me tired early. I slowed down near the end to finish without feeling too tired.
For future reference, to reverse a route in the app, open the planned route and choose the "Plan" button to copy it into the Route Planner. "Reverse Route" is then available in one of the menus. Then save the reversed route with a recognizable name. On the Climate Ride earlier this year, I figured out how to do it. But today another rider, Wes, helped me work through it again. Thanks!
With the reversed route save in my RideWithGPS collection, I was able to download it to the Wahoo, too. In the end, I hardly used the RideWithGPS route guidance. The Wahoo map on the handlebars was sufficient, although I did miss one of the last turns, which got me out of a little climbing.
