Red Meadow lake to Whitefish
Woke up a couple times during the night needing to zip my sleeping bag up a little more. Emerged from the tent to a clear, cold dewy morning. I once again dug to the very bottom of a bike bag and fished out my warm gloves. For the first time on the trip, flip-flops seemed like a poor choice of footwear. The jet boil struggled to light, causing a wave of coffee deprived panic to set in. I whacked the stove on the picnic table and it mercifully complied and started working.
My riding companion-Brian from Buffalo—was already up getting his gear packed and ready. Despite being from Buffalo, he is not a fan of the cold, and was dressed like Ralphie from a Christmas Story. We drank coffee and surveyed our wet gear, me trying to muster up the motivation to finish packing up, Brian trying to act patient. I finally got trail-ready and Brian and I clanked on down the toward Whitefish.
Since we had banked so many miles the day before, we had a measly 30 mile mostly downhill to Whitefish. Luckily, only about 10 miles of the road looked like a playground for mountain goats, so we made good, uneventful time into Whitefish. Directly to Glacier Bike shop we went; followed by a much needed meal at the Buffalo cafe. I highly recommend both.
After 7 days of riding, I decided to do a layover day in whitefish so need to figure out a place to stay and what to do for the next 36 hours besides research the Mexican food scene in whitefish.
Brian is moving on to other adventures, and I wish him well. I really enjoyed his company the last 2 days.
