Decided to escape the Willamette Valley heat and do a ride at the coast. This ride usually starts from Tillamook Bay Community College. However, it is under major construction so had to park about 1/4 mile away near the fairgrounds. That was just the first little obstacle. Headed west through town to get on 4th Street then through a residential area to access Highway 131. The route usually turns off at Bayocean Rd. Turned onto Bayocean and noticed a "Road Closed except Local Access" sign. Decided to continue, thinking I should be able to reach the turn for Cape Meares Highway. Welcome obstacle #2. At the 3.5 mile mark there was another "Road Closed" sign and it specifically said pedestrians and bicycles prohibited. Turned around and returned to Highway 131. Haven't ridden the highway to Netarts. About two miles before Netarts, noticed a turn for Cape Lookout via Whiskey Creek Rd. Turning here would have shortened the ride by at least 5 miles (not counting the out and back on Bayocean). Decided to continue into Oceanside because I wanted to stop at Oceanside Beach for some photos. Riding into Oceanside meant climbing back up the hill into Netarts. Returned to Netarts then made the turn onto Netarts Bay Rd. Mile 22 was the turn for Whiskey Creek Rd. Rode into Cape Lookout Park for more photos and a quick snack break before tackling the major climb on Cape Lookout Rd. The 2.75 mile climb is mainly 6-8% grade, but there are a couple short sections to 10%. There is a nice, long downhill on the back side then another couple miles to the Sandlake Rd junction (mile 33). A 1.5 mile climb follows on Sandlake Rd, then it's 3 miles of mostly downhill to the HIghway 101 junction. The next 8 miles was on busy 101 to the turn for Tillamook River Rd. The final 5 miles is on much-less busy Tillamook River Rd into Tillamook, then the loop by the High School back to the car.
