This follows the Cascade bike High Pass Challenge climb segment on FS25. Climbs to the end of FS25 with a short off bike hike to view Spirit lake and the Crater. The as posted route Starts from the Iron Creek camp ground makes a clockwise trip. It returns via FS 26. When we did this ride the very end of FS 26 just as it returns to the campground was under some serious construction repair of a large culvert, this would likely be completed by end of summer 2025. FS 26 is in poor condition with intermittent section of gravel and sunken road, a high centered vehicle could drive it but not a passenger car . We were on gravel bikes and had no real trouble but it requiredres constant vigilance and speed checks as you round corners to avoids holes, dips, severe cracks and surprise sections of gravel. FS26 has a few steeps I recorded as much as 16% grade.
If we do this again our assessment is it would be better to ride counter clockwise wise and climb up FS26, and descend on FS25. FS 25 is in far better shape and you couldd maintain a much faster speed.
Overall it’s a good route on a gravel bike, FS26 is not road bike capable.
