Monday
I woke up long before sunrise mostly because I had to pee, and just decided to go ahead and get up after a fairly decent sleep. I got back going again while it was still a bit dark and explored the rest of the service road as far as I had patience for. There were dozens and dozens more huge spiderwebs to go through again. The road was mostly rideable but overgrown with small trees. I think I rode to the end even though the map said it continued on. I didn't see a roadbed anymore and there was a little overgrown P for a turnaround and an old truck bench seat plopped down on the edge of the loop. Good enough for me so I turned around and was very glad to get back to pavement and no spiders. The sunrise was really great and I had it all to myself way out in the country where nobody was up yet on Labor day.
I passed by a few stores and decided I had enough water and supplies to wait till the last store till the long gravel sector bits in Jasper county to the Ocmulgee river. I was on a lot more gravel roads and since it's pretty dry the past couple weeks they were very loose and it seemed like with way too much gravel. But they weren't all that slow going, just a bit slower than ideal.
After the first gas station stop at 441(that's in the process of being widened to 4 lane there) I did a series of fun gravel roads that included a bit of exploration after a road I was to take wasn't there. I decided to explore another one that went off in a different direction but looked like it dead ended because it had grass going down the middle. But it turned out to be one of the coolest roads i've ridden in awhile. Very twisty and well maintained gravel, shaded, only one culvert that had been recently replaced, and pretty narrow. Very cool find. I did a litte loop of other roads to get back on track but I was having fun so I wasn't worried about the extra mileage.
I did several more fun gravel roads before finally popping out to Highway 16 which wasn't too busy. I was very glad to cross the river and finally roll up to a gas station on Stark road where I loaded up on snacks and water, a bit more than I needed but I was hungry and thirsty and hoped to make it my last stop for the final 55 miles.
I rode gravel through the rest of Butts county and then High Falls road to Griffin which I thought might be busy but it was almost completely deserted so it was a pleasant ride with a nice tailwind. Ellis road was much busier although everyone was courteous and the traffic drops away once you pass Cheatham road. I still had plenty of food but was out of water right before getting home right at 5 at my estimated arrival time I had figured in my head from the day before.
