A wonderful loop route of mixed surfaces- gravel/dirt/paved. Start near Wakemup Bay, clockwise travel. Did this route on a 2.5 day bike pack. Day 1 30 miles to Vermilion River Tavern (VRT). Had a great stop w dinner/ cold beers and live music at the VRT, camped overnight. Day 2- 55 miles VRT to Ely via Echo Lake Trail thru Superior National Forest. Beautiful scenery Thru BWCA area, explored several entry points, had a nice swim at Stuart River Access Point. News to have a water filter this Day to ensure adequate hydration needs. Echo trail all gravel, in good condition for the most part. Arrived later afternoon to Ely, nice hotel stay at the Canoe on Inn, and a good dinner at the Frisky Otter! Day 3- 55 miles Ely back to Wakemup Bay. Breakfast and coffee at Sheridan Street Deli I n Ely to start the day. Ride most all paved surfaces, Mesabi Bike Trail most of the way, stopped at the Tavern on the Bay for lunch on Lake Vermillion. Great lunch, overlooking the lake. finished up at starting point about 4 PM.
