The weather today was absolutely spectacular! Under deep blue skies punctuated by the occasional cumulus, and temps in the low seventies, who could ask for a better day? The wind was, at times, somewhat of a challenge, but nothing to complain about. Our original plan was to tackle Vega Mountain Road, but Joey’s tired legs and my unpleasantly sour stomach precluded such an ambitious challenge. When we got as far as the hard left bend by the beautiful meadows, some thirteen miles from our start at Joey and Pat’s place, we decided to turn around after a short break. Then IT happened - as Joey was attempting to clip in, his right cleat slid out from underneath him, he and the bike rolled uncontrollably down the crown of the road, both crashing into the guardrail! He hit his head hard on the upper portion of the rail and collapsed on the ground, dazed and confused. Luckily, it did not appear as if he had been seriously injured and was able to ride the return leg without further incident. Will he ever relent and start wearing a helmet?
