In 2025, in the Northern Hemisphere, this date is the end of summer and the start of autumn. On the day of the Autumnal Equinox, the Sun appears to cross the celestial equator, heading southward. Because of differences between the calendar year and the tropical year, the September equinox may occur from September 21 to 24.
At the equinox, the Sun rises directly in the east and sets directly in the west. For viewers at the north or south poles, it moves virtually horizontally on or above the horizon, not obviously rising or setting apart from the movement in "declination" (and hence altitude) of a little under a half (0.39) degree per day.
For observers in either hemisphere not at the poles, the Sun rises and sets more and more to the south during the three months following the September equinox. This period is the second half of a 6-month long southerly movement, beginning with the June solstice when the Sun rises and sets at its most northern point.

A short ride today, because I had lots of stuff to do the rest of the day. And I'm planning to join the club C ride tomorrow, so I didn't want to do too much. I rode in Watsonville, familiar farm fields, along the Pajaro river, through the town of Pajaro and then through Watsonville. I took photos of farm fields, the river, and Struve Slough.
Also a photo of Monterey Vista Mobile Estates. I used the club route "Frank's 20-Miler," but I started in the middle. I don't know Frank, or whether he lives at Monterey Vista Mobile Estates, but that's where the route starts and ends.
