Camp 1918 to Grants, NM I called the camp “camp 1918” due to an inscription in the rock above my tent. It looked legit!? Anyway, it was one of my favorite camps of the trip. I woke up to calm, peace and warmth! Not a single car had been down the road since we got there the evening before. It was nice to not be cold in the morning. The sun rose quickly and warmed me further. Since we were safe from the mud we weren’t in a rush to get on the road, so we rolled out around 9:00. We started out easy, as we knew there was a pretty good climb about half way through. Again, we saw no cars for miles and miles. It was wonderful! We climbed out of the desert into the forest again, and I enjoyed seeing the now familiar plants and foliage return at their chosen elevation. After cresting the climb, we stopped at a spring on the other side and had a snack. The road then rolled through more New Mexico forest, before turning to pavement and dropping into Grants, NM. We made pretty short work of the paved road and arrived in town just in time to hide from a passing thunderstorm under a carport. Again, a hotel won for lodging, so I’m feeling spoiled and too comfortable! Seriously, I feel grateful as ever, and can’t wait to see what the road ahead brings.
