The Old Borges Ranch is a 1,035 acres historic district in the Mount Diablo foothills within the Walnut Creek Open Space. A former cattle ranch, Old Borges Ranch includes multiple historic buildings, a ranger station, farm animals, and access to trails. In 1899, Portuguese immigrant Francisco "Frank" Borges purchased 700 acres for a cattle ranch and home for his family. The ranch's farmhouse, constructed of redwood, was built in 1901. The family also built barns, a blacksmith shop, and a windmill. Five generations of the Borges family lived and worked at the ranch. Walnut Creek voters approved $6.75 million to preserve open space in the Diablo foothills, and in 1976, the city of Walnut Creek purchased the ranch. I'm not familiar with the hiking trails around Mount Diablo, so I was glad to join a guided hike. We learned to distinguish the three types of Oak trees on Mount Diablo and much more. Lots of climbing and descending, some of it steep, but not too much overall. I feel like I didn't wear out my legs for the Mount Diablo Challenge tomorrow. Before the hike started, I walked up to see the preserved Borges Ranch structures including the original farm house, still standing.
