I've been wanting to check out Bake Sum for a while after hearing good things about it from several people. The forecast for Saturday was rain so we moved it to Sunday since it was supposed to be rain-free but checking the forecast this morning, it showed rain between 4-6p.
Before I left, I got a text from Anthony saying he'd left his helmet and sunglasses on Caltrain when I transferred to BART. Luckily it was an old helmet and I hadn't left yet and I was able to bring an extra that had.
I met him at The Crown which had a 5 Spice Latte last year but they didn't have that or a PSL this year. Anthony liked the coffee he got but it was too bitter and sour for me - the things I don't want my coffee to taste like.
It was a little chaotic getting over to Bake Sum but we made it where we met Anthony's friend, Stephanie. I got a Traditional Croissant but the one that immediately caught my eye was the Croissubi! The Traditional Croissant was pretty good, a solid 7. The Croissubi was disappointing. It tasted like a croissant. I couldn't taste the Spam or nori. It was shocking. It really should've been Spam forward. It was a good croissant but a bad Croissubi.
Neither of us had climbed up to Skyline the way we did today and it was a nice climb. It wasn't steep and the neighborhood we rode through was really cute. I'm sad no one else joined us to experience it. I thought we should try to do a TdC stage once a month to check out new roads and new places. The roads were really quiet too, all the way to Moraga really.
We should've been able to make it back before the forecast rain but instead it started sprinkling just before we got to Bear Creek Rd. around mile 22-ish. At first it was nothing but it steadily came down harder until it was full rain. I probably should've put my jacket on earlier than I did. We had a tailwind up until that point. Once we headed west, the headwind was pretty strong. It was on and off all the way until we made it back to El Cerrito where there was a bit of deja vu rejoining the route from last weekend's GBC Send It East Bay (in the opposite direction).
I had put in an optional lunch stop at Los Mole and we decided to stop to get some warm food. The food was good but we still got a bit chilly sitting outside. The wind had picked up as well so we decided rather than do the Bay Trail which probably would've been a terrible headwind, we stayed inland. Plus, Anthony hadn't found his PSL yet and I felt like a hot chocolate would be a great idea to warm up.
We navigated basically back to the start to find coffee. Unfortunately it started raining on the way and this time it was hard enough that my shoes were soaked. By the time we got to Mother Tongue, it was so wet that we couldn't properly use any of our devices as the touch screens were confused by the water. I hadn't gotten a croissant shot of Anthony yet so we had to get one at Mother Tongue. Their traditional croissant was kind of dry and not that great. 5/10?
I'm glad I brought my ShakeDry and rear fender otherwise I would've been pretty miserably cold. I was only a little bit chilly.
