RWGPS start is correct now that Daylight Savings is over ( 0514 start). I chose to start at Glendale / Canal due to traffic concerns in getting to the close spot of Camelback.
Great route. This western side south-going part is absolutely fantastic. Great bike lines/canal trail & good road surface. Very low traffic at this time. Broadway has a bike lane until the last few yards before the turn south on 91st Ave.
91st ave doesn't have a bike lane but is generally wide enough. There are a couple tight spots..
When get down to Baseline and on the reservation, there are no bike lanes, but traffic on Baseline is sort of high, but the rest if very low traffic on res.
Of course I am always a bit concerned when riding the reservation about the dogs. There was only the 1 white dog that likes to come out to run, but not dangerous. He noticed me way too late to come out. This is just south of the school on 83rd Ave around mile 16.
51st ave is all brand new smooth, wide pavement.
AZ 347 (Maricopa Rd ) was busy as I hit it at rush hour! The stop light to get onto AZ347 was 3 minutes! Then 2.5 minutes to get of 347.
I was questioning where I was going to stop for food. Should I use the Black Rock Coffee Bar at Ocotillo, mile 54, or press on to Queen Creek. I opted for Queen Creek mile 71.8. Got 3 breakfast sausage, egg, cheese english muffin. At 2 there and took 1 with me. Also got a Large Peach smoothie YUMMY. 27 minute stop, which was my only extended time stop!
Traffic was ok on Ellsworth since mid morning.
Then up to Usery Park Visitor Center where I ate most of the extra breakfast muffin. Got water and pee break.
In the climb out of Salt River Canyon, I noticed my front tire seemed to jerk/catch a bit as I passed it back & forth over the white line. Wasn't sure what it was, then finally when the Bush Hwy meet Beeline, on the bridge I stopped and check it out. It was at about 20psi! So I decided to just inflate it back to 62 to see how long that would last, mile 101.8. Stated the game of can I make it home, and will my battery charge the inflator and still leave enough for charge the computer!
Mile 113.9 I got there just as the fountain in Fountain Hills was about to end. Quickly got a pic and turned around to get one with me in it and I think the fountain stopped as I was trying that shot!
I made it to the top of Fountain Hills ( Adero Canyon) before inflating again.. 117.9
Did the usual water stop at Aztec Park. 126.6 Somewhere in here I think I inflated again. Not sure where.
As I approached top of Carefree, I started racing the sunset to get over onto as much of AZ &$ west of I-10, since those 7-8 miles are on pitch dark asphalt and the lights do not work well on them. So no stop in Cave Creek or anywhere until at least got to mile 165 gas station! Had to pick up the speed. Sunset happened about 1/2 way across Carefree Hwy, say mile 154. So would I have enough light when I got to AZ 74?
YES! Yahoo. I made it over to the Shell at mile 165 while the sky still had a great red tint. I opted to head to the control at mile 173.2 to get water refill and inflate again.
Did 1 more inflation along the canal somewhere, since after I reached Glendale, I still had another 7 miles to get home.
Made it.
2 critter sightings. 1 coyote ran across the road, very fast. Then along the canal on way south at the end, 2 black cats chased and then stopped at the guard rail and I had to make sure I rode around them.
