Key to this was positioning and paceing. I was 5th or so going into the single track about 4 miles in. By the end of the single track Prosser and Miner and 3 others had got a gap. But when I came out onto a road I was with a group of 5 and we had a gap. The five included Luke Wilson who was in 3rd on GC. Luke flatted and then there were 4. I thought I was the slowest/weakest of that group so I measure my pulls, especially cause for a while I was behind Luke (little draft) and the guy behind me (Nix?) would pull hard when I got off the front. So I was doing 1/3 mile pulls and some others 6/10 or mile pulls. Next to drop was a big guy on a single speed, who'd been doing some big long pulls. So now 3 of us including Nix who I believe was ahead of my on GC. but then he stopped right after hitting a hole either for a flat (likely) or blown. Then I was with this fast under 40 guy on a road bike. I told him I was not pulling as long as I could cause I was afraid he would drop me; then he pulled for a couple of miles? before Scott Miner came by (he'd flatted) and I told him to get on Miner's wheel which he did. I figured he was so strong he could stay with Miner and perhaps help him catch up to the front 3. I then thought how stupid to give up my draft to the finish...this was mile 45, 30 still to go. I was terrified that Luke had fixed his flat and was with a group and they were going to catch me, given that I might have only been averaging about 16-17 or so mph. But no one caught me and about 3 miles out I caught the guy who I had sent onto Miner's wheel. Apparently he had blown. So I was 3rd on the day and 3rd for the stage race behind Prosser and Miner on the over 40 category. I was 5th (out of 26) overall including the under 40s. Forgot to mention that Jon Livengood who was much stronger than me and over 40, crashed on the first day so not there the second.
December update, the "fast guy under 40" is a fellow named Adam, a friend of Steve Dyers, who was a professional for a while. He didn't stay with Miner cause his knee when out on him.
