Farley 9.6. Mostly sunny with some high clouds, cool temps but comfortable, 45 at the start, got up to 53 by ride's end, West winds 5-10 mph but not much of a factor in the woods. A gorgeous Fall day even with most of the leaves gone. I saw 4 hikers, 1 deer and no other cyclists. It's been so long since I rode here I decided to take the fat bike and it was a good call.
Trails mostly dry but heavily leaf covered, which made it treacherous because of all the smooth rocks in the moraine. At times very slippery and the studs on the tires didn't help cornering on the rocks. Last time riding here was in July, 2015 I believe, on my first week long trip here with Dave Frable. He rode a fat bike and I rode my first time on a 29er with full suspension. I didn't like it then as the trails were too narrow and technical. We rented the bikes from Backyard Bikes, rode from Ema Carlin Trails on the connector to John Muir. Both of us crashed frequently. For me, it was the narrow trails (built for 26" MTBs) and the too wide handlebars on the 29er. I did okay today, guess all my off road riding has paid off.
Unfortunately Covid 19 did the bike shop in. Somebody tried to resurrect it after Mike retired but that failed too so it's now vacant - both the shop and the cafe/store. I parked by it today and rode up to the John Muir trailhead 1.5 miles North. I covered many of the hard sections (mostly blue and one black trail) then hopped over to the Ema Connector trail for an out and back of 8 miles. This is a two hour drive each way from Geneva, so not a frequently done ride. Next year I'll hit it on the Fuel when the weather is warmer. Maybe an overnight with road ride thrown in one of the days.
