Where do I begin? I guess with the rain that ruined my original plans to ride dirt instead. And then the rain again for changing when it was going to happen so that it further messed up my plans on which day of the weekend to ride.
Sunday was originally supposed to be raining all day but instead it went to being dry, even sunny, during the day. It wasn't my plan to wake up early originally but Kira said she was up for a morning ride before her brunch plans. I said I'd join if I woke up (as did Natalie). Well I woke up early but Kira slept in until after it was our time to meet. Since it was still misting/drizzling when it was time to ride over, I decided to wait until I heard from her. I guess it was still drizzling at her place so we cancelled. 15 minutes after that, the sky started to clear up and there were patches of blue.
I wouldn't have gotten early but I knew if I didn't make plans to ride with someone, there was a good chance I would just stay at home and not ride at all. I also wanted to wait until it got warmer.
I wanted to ride dirt but the dirt was too wet. Winds were also from the south so Ideally I'd head north and then maybe take Caltrain back to avoid the headwind but I didn't feel like riding north at all. I wanted to go to Half Moon Bay but there was rain in the forecast. I thought it would be safer inland.
I finally settled on going to Made Out Of Dough and State of Mind Public House and Pizzeria.
Made Out Of Dough didn't really have a lot of stuff that appealed to me. I got a Blueberry Lemon Scone that was alright.
The trip south into the headwind and with the garbage miles while I was already annoyed with the weekend did not help. I enjoy road riding to hang out with friends and socialize but I've come to realize, road riding for me is like a commute - mindless and doesn't really bring me joy. Riding dirt, on the other hand, is something I do to have fun and brings me immense joy.
More grumpiness when I got to State of Mind. No one was around to seat me so I went inside and asked one of the waitresses if it was okay to grab a table outside and they said, yeah, there's no wait times for outdoor seating. The table I got, there were leaves being blown down onto me and the table and it was a little chilly but mostly just annoying.
At the table next to me was a couple with a newborn. The husband didn't seem to know how to shut up. He just kept talking and talking about nothing special. I barely heard the wife respond or so much. Read the room buddy! I would've loved to have gotten away from him but I couldn't.
I ordered and got my drink, then a couple minutes later a different waitress came by and said to me in a very accusatory tone, "You didn't check in and there's a wait." as though I somehow skipped passed her to get this table. I told her I did check in and that I was told there was no wait for tables outside. The large party she was trying to seat (at my table) came in well after I got my drink. She apologized at least but that and the non-stop talking dude really put a bad taste in my mouth. At least my burger and fries were good.
By the time I left, the sky had because dark and ominous. I was worried I'd get rained on again but luckily by the time I got to Portola the sun start to peek out again and I took my layers off once more.
A father and teenage son passed me just before Windy Hill but then they were going slower than I wanted to. Rather than leapfrog them again, I just took the tow all the way to Mountain Home.
Heading north was nice to finally get the tailwind. It's a long time since Cañada was fun on the way home.
At Ralston and Hallmark, some kid in a 350z managed to go from the eastbound lanes into the bushes on the north side of the westbound lanes. Traffic had been rerouted to Belmont Canyon but I took the path to see why the road was shut down. I rode past the guy as the police were saying he was impaired.
