Sonny's route request for today - "prefer not too extreme" and "something not very hilly". Check and check! :)
The forecast LIED today. The start was supposed to be a little warmer than Thursday and the high was going to be slightly cooler but in general, I was expecting something similar.
Well the start felt as cold, even after I put on a base layer, which I didn't have on on Thursday. It remained cold and overcast all the way to lunch in Morgan Hill.
The only time I really warmed up enough to sweat was on the McKean climb south of the Calero boat ramp lot. Sonny had been pulling and I was planning on putting in an effort for the climb since I was cold. Sonny pulled off pretty much at the bottom of the climb and Bob said to Sonny, "You're going to let Andy pull for the climb?". That was basically my cue to go. :)
As we headed east towards lunch, it became more apparent how much of a tailwind we had gotten and how chilly the wind really was. I was expecting the trip back to be colder.
At lunch we could see the sun coming out and the sky was blue by the time we started rolling again. It started off cold as I expected and no layers were shed. It really didn't warm up for a while and even then I only took off my vest. The arm warmers and knee warmers stayed on all day, as did the full gloves.
Coyote Creek Trail north of Metcalf to around E Capitol Expressway seemed way rougher and bumpier from tree roots pushing up through the pavement than before.
On the way back through the debris hellscape of San Jose, heading up 10th, Sonny was in the lead and I was on his inside. Bob was behind Sonny. Up ahead I could see big chunks of glass and I started to move toward Sonny to avoid them. I don't know what happened with Bob but as we rode around the glass, Bob's wheel just let go of all its air like a balloon.
Turns out he got a pretty bad sidewall cut and they were new tires too. Also turns out, Bob uses blue cheese sealant so even if it wasn't a sidewall cut, would it have sealed? :) He threw in a tube and the rest of the ride home went by without any more issues.
