PCH Rando brevet run by Willie Hunt, who did a stupendous job devoting his day, a very long day, to 9 riders so they could share this awesome ride. While all 9 riders enjoyed the scenery, only 3 riders finished the entire ride (the other 2 being Stefan and a strong young lady from the Pasadena area, (Jay?)).
Willie drove his truck and used it to tow his Subaru so that he could transport 9 riders and bikes to the start, and back again after we were finished. He drove support all day, really a VERY long day. What a guy!
This is a very scenic and challenging route, and was a LOT of fun. Thanks Willie!
I had to slow to 4 mph, and even 3.5 mph, on the last few miles of the Sherman Pass climb to avoid cramps; all kinds of leg muscles were twitching and spasming, threatening to cramp. I took more calcium and salt than ever before. They recovered, for the most part, when I was able to peddle easy on the descent, and I was eventually able to pop a few rollers.
The weather along the Kern River was the best I have experienced. While it was hot, it was manageable. Lucky day! (Garmin showed a temperature range from 50-99F.)
Metrics of Sherman Pass climb with highest FIETS score on this gps track:
11.68 FIETS; 15.5 mi, 5167'/-15', 6.7% avg grade (9.8% max)
I think there is actually about 5300' of elevation gain on this climb since the top is supposed to be 9200', and there is an elevation sign after you have already started climbing which says 4000'.
There are a lot of "segments" saved under the left panel to isolate the metrics for different sections of this route. The ride starts with an easy warm-up of 10.1 miles (483'/-185'), and then the real fun begins. ;-)
