The morning was very warm but close enough to 50 that I wore knee warmers and shoe covers but I only wore regular fingerless gloves and sun sleeves. This was pretty comfortable most of the morning till it warmed up. The traffic was really light even though I didn't leave all that early.
The ride down to Barnesville was fast and without hardly any cars after I got a few miles out of Griffin. I did a new road just outside Barnesville and the temperature bottomed out at this point from hovering around 53-55. It was cold at first but my hands adjusted after a bit. And not too long after sunrise the temperature really rode fast and along with it the southwest wind.
I stopped for the first time near Roberta at the top of a hill with a cellphone tower to put on sunscreen, take off warm clothes and take a nature break. I enjoyed a very fast rolling descent of deserted pavement with the wind behind me over the next several miles. In the southern corner of Crawford county I did a few dead ends. This went pretty well, some had some good hills which continued on almost to my first stop next to the interstate at a gas station.
I brought a ton of food with me to hopefully minimize my reliance on gas station food prices and so I only got a bag of chips and a coke after 105 miles. I still had enough water to tide me over to a park in Centerville where I hoped to fill my bottles.
Centerville neighborhood riding followed the store stop. Lots of trailers but some new subdivisions with large houses. Lots of full trash cans overflowing out at the end of driveways after Christmas. Kids out trying out their new toys.
Since a lot of things connected up well I didn't have to worry much about traffic through here. The park stop was almost a bust. The bathrooms were locked and the water fountains were off. But they had a big sink next to the bathrooms that was still on thankfully. The park is only 5 years old and it's already almost useless.
I wound my way south towards Perry and felt good but was starting to feel soreness and fatigue set in and was glad to stop at another gas station next to a new Publix on the outskirts of Perry.
With this stop I was done with the neighborhood riding and could get on with riding south and east the rest of the way. But the wind was very high and made progress really slow especially on all the exposed roads. But having the aerobars makes this so much faster and more comfortable than before.
There was a rutted out dirt road that failed to connect through but was easy to backtrack and go around. Soon after the sun went down slowly and I was finally left in darkness for the few more miles into Pineview. My ailing right knee held up well on this ride but it was sore by the end. The highway went pretty fast and I got to Rochelle about 30 minutes ahead of my estimate. The temperature had barely dropped at all after sunset, it was still 68.
