Dien Bien Phu is full of agriculture and history. A recommendation was to stay at ‘A Thia Homestay’ which is off the beaten track and quiet. I stayed at their sister site which is close to the main war memorial. Museums open early, you can see some historical sites etc in the morning before setting off. Vietnamese liberation from the French. About 25km in you turn off onto small poured concrete paths that are only trafficked by motos, enjoyable. There’s a Long climb on these paths and then a steep descent down to a very very rural basin village. Before you exit this village there are some small stalls for snacks and drinks but not much else, so take this chance. The climb out of the village is tough and dusty but you’re rewarded on the other side. Amazing rice field views, ideally in the late afternoon sunlight. Very Small stream crossing needed. Tuan Giao isn’t that exciting, suggest staying in the town about 15km earlier where you cross the river - bustling and has a big market. Search for the bridge Cầu Búng Lao or Cầu Treo this is where the town is.
