This ride was very cold at the start then got very windy. I rode the first 18 or so miles solo then the next 20 miles with my club then the remaining ride solo. About 45 miles in my left hamstring was bothering me a little but the left knee was more of a concern as it was hurting from the very beginning. The knee was a major concern but became a second or third concern. The wind started to pick up as the ride progress it was coming from the west. So most of my early part of the ride I was having side wind. As I turned onto Rte 72 there was sand on the road and my front wheel took a hop/slide which caused me to contract my left leg as that happened my left hamstring lock up with a cramp I tried to ride it out but it was so bad I pulled over. Just as I got off the bike my right Hamstring locked up too. now both were locked up and I couldn't walk or move to well. I took some electrolytes, drank some fluids and ate a banana, stretched and tried to walk. It took about 10-15 minutes before I was able to get back on the bike to be welcomed with a strong head wind. With both legs still cramping a 10-15 mph head wind in a wide open area with nothing to block the wind and a 1-3% incline grade I was in trouble for the next 19 miles. It was so bad I was riding between 13-14 mph and felt like I had bonked and was in survival mode. I finally got to the end of the road and reached a convenient store (WaWa), I had ran out of fluids so I refilled both bottles with water, drank one bottle so I refilled it aqs I didn't want to take a chance of running out. My legs were still cramping. I must have looked pretty bad as a family in a car asked if I was alright. I told them, I was OK just cramping. I had 17 miles to go so I decide to change the route as the I wanted to get away from the head wind would have been another 10 miles 3 miles with a side and 4 miles tailwind. I didn't think I could take another 10 miles of headwind. Thinking the changed route would keep the wind at my side I rode on. I had a tailwind for most of 7 miles except for one spot a side wind which almost took me out the bike slid side ways and scared the hell out of me. After that brief wake up it was smooth sailing. The only thing that was taking its toll on me was the long inclines of about 1-3% grade. I made a turn and to my surprise the next 9 miles was directly back into a head wind. I was not a happy camper and to add insult to injury was still riding up and down these inclines but the down part was not relieve because the wind was so strong I had to work to get any speed but my legs were dead so there was not much left. I just had to hang in there until I finished, pure torture I tell you. I finally finished and was a real happy rider. This was perhaps my hardest 100 miles because of the head wind for so many nonstop miles with the inclines that seemed to never let up. When I checked the weather it wasn't supposed to be this windy or cold!
