Sometime in 1670, she embarked on a perilous journey upon the French sailing ship La Nouvelle France for the newly formed colony of Quebec. Marguerite had agreed to be a Filles du Roi, just as her sister Marie had done two years earlier. Marguerite arrived in Quebec on July 31, 1670 and sometime later in 1670, married a man she had never met before her trip, my 9th generational arrière-grand-père Pierre Ménard, a soldier of the Régiment Carignan-Salières. He had agreed to stay in New France (Quebec), to help France sustain an emerging colony in the New World. The records vary, but it seems they had between 6 & 11 children, which if so, would have assured the couple of a lifetime, yearly government pension worth one year of a soldier’s salary. This must have been the case because when Pierre died in 1688, Marguerite had at least 5 children below the age of 10, and they all would have surely starved to death without some kind of financial assistance.
