We started about an hour behind schedule and I was shivering when we finally began. The ride starts with a descent so Ollie and bombed it so I could warm up. Otherwise I was wobbling because I was shivering so bad.
I warmed up pretty quickly and realized we were going to hard and we slowed down to let everyone catch up.
Once people caught back on Ollie was raring to go. I knew I wasn't going to be able to sustain that pace and we slowed to a reasonable pace.
On the first climb of Monitor, Ollie found a friend and he and Gabe dropped us. I was feeling the altitude and it took me longer than normal to get used to being short of breath. Just taking a drink was hard.
Descending the back side was so much fun! It was weird having no air resistance and everything being so much quieter. It was a little sketchy at times since people were riding in the middle or on the left of the lane but going slow. The views were spectacular but I was going way to fast to take photos (most of the time). I did consider slowing down but it was so much fun.
At the first rest stop, I don't think I ate enough considering I didn't have breakfast. Just 5 roasted potatoes and a V8. On the way back up, I was already starting to feel my legs and I was wondering if I'd be able to keep up with the group.
After that I made sure to eat more. Descending the front side of Monitor was a blast!
Heading up Ebbetts seemed brutal. Lots of steep sections. Everyone was so happy to get to the top. I didn't know if I'd be able to do another two passes. I had some Cup Noodle and bunch of food which later helped a lot. I also got bitten by mosquitoes!
Descending the back side of Ebbetts I hit a couple of potholes hard. I was really lucky not to flat. A quick pit stop and then back up. The food from the top kicked in and I got my energy back up on that fourth pass.
This was also the first time on the ride that I really started to notice the heat. Thankfully the day felt cooler than forecast. It was mostly pleasant and only felt hot from lunch onward.
Ebbetts seemed like a sketchy descent because it was narrower than the others with no dividing lines and people all over the road. In the end it wasn't so bad and it was pretty fun.
On the way down I came to this turn with a cyclist at the side of the road signalling to slow down and two ambulances parked at the corner. There were two paramedics looking over the edge. I couldn't see down but I could tell it was a sheer drop that went down pretty far.
I didn't think anything of it but at the lunch stop back near the base of Ebbetts, tons of firetrucks, ambulances and sherriff's trucks with sirens on were flying up the pass. It was scary. Scarier still was when we saw Megan and she told us that she couldn't find Anthony. That was when I feared the worst. It ended up being him that flew off the side of the road. He fractured his spine and got beat up pretty bad but luckily it wasn't anything worse than that.
I had been eating so much that I wasn't even really that hungry for lunch. I was dreading the climbing we'd have to do just to get to Carson Pass but it ended up being alright. Along the way we lost Leo and then we eventually lost Gabe.
Then there were three. Kathryn crushed the first part of Carson and was crushing Ted and I. At that pace, I didn't think I was going to make it. Luckily it leveled out but we had a headwind to the second part of the climb.
About 700' from the top, Kathryn started to fade and at about 500', I started to surge. I was determined to go for it and finish strong. I knew I could do it even though my legs didn't feel great - it was all mental. At one point I was worried that I was going to wreck myself and not be able to make it back. We still had 20-ish miles to do with some climbing.
At the top, I was so stoked! Between that and going downhill for most of the way back I finished the ride on such a high!
UPDATE: This is crazy but I found out another person went off at the same spot as Anthony right after they put him in the ambulance. No idea how that could've happened. I was skeptical that another person could've done that when there are safety vehicles parked there. He overheard a paramedic say, "Another one?" *facepalm*

Best format for turn by turn directions on Edge 500, 510. Will provide true turn by turn navigation on Edge 800, 810, 1000, Touring including custom cue entries. Great for training when we release those features. Not currently optimal for Virtual Partner.
Useful for uploading your activity to another service, keeping records on your own computer etc.
Useful for any GPS unit. Contains no cuesheet entries, only track information (breadcrumb trail). Will provide turn by turn directions (true navigation) on the Edge 705/800/810/1000/Touring, but will not have any custom cues. Works great for Mio Cyclo. Find GPS specific help in our help system.
