Peel Back Roof ...
Tunnel Count =12
After a relaxing day yesterday I was up at 7, shower then a lazy breakfast. Next I spent half an hour cleaning and servicing the bike and by 9 it was running like a dream again.
Bags packed and loaded and I was off by 9:30.
As I set off I had tears in my eyes, not because of thinking about yesterday and the bomb ... No I had accidently rubbed factor 30 sun screen into it !
It was a short day but threatened to be great once I cleared Hiroshima and the coastal towns. To be fair getting out of Hiroshima was reasonable, eventually passing industrial areas and docks. The mix between road and paths today was good.
At Kure I turned a corner and there was a huge submarine perched alongside the road. It was part of the Japan Maritime defence museum and was decommissioned in 2004 - the sub was called Akishio
and you could actually go on it via the museum.
Here is it's wiki page ...
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/JDS_Akishio
Kure was awkward and took a while but someone had a worse time than me - I reached a junction before an underpass where a Policeman was in the middle of the road blowing a whistle and directing traffic. He waved a woman out from the left and as she turned onto the road she drove straight into a plastic traffic control barrier ... You couldn't make it up. Then as I went past the underpass I saw the problem .. A camper van must have been 2.65 metres high as it was wedged in the 2.6 m underpass and had started to peel its roof back ! I eventually turned right into a great 1.5 mile tunnel. Not only did it have a 3m wide path , there was actually a full height screen between the path and the traffic.
So eventually a big suspension bridge appeared, it was my turn off onto the start of a 25 mile route across 7 islands in the inland (Seto) Sea.
The bridge had a Toll but bikes were free !
It was a shade of green like Bianchi Celeste (cyclists will know the colour) and despite forecast of rain in the morning easing off, it had been ok but now turned dark and cool and actually started spitting for about 20minutes. Next bridge across to Kami-kamagari was a pale blue box cantilever. Next my favourite, another suspension across to Toyoshima - there were fish farms in the bay making a great picture with the bridge.
Another 4 bridges and I reached Okasuna with 20 minutes to go for my ferry. But as I turned the corner into the port a ferry was leaving .. There was no other there. The guy at the ticket office spoke absolutely zero English and all the signage even the times were in Japanese.
Eventually I confirmed a sign that said 4:15 - It was 3:55 and all the guy would say when I pointed and asked was "Stopped" ...I suspect it had left way early !
So a wait till 5:35 .. Not ideal but at this stage I need to get off this island as it has nothing on it ... not even a cafe !
The 5:35 was a tiny but fast boat which left on time and got me to Imabari as it was getting dark - my hotel was 1mile down a srraight quiet road.
I have now been on 3 of the 4 big islands as Imabari is on Shikoku, so I only have Hokkaido left but that' s a long way away still !
And counting all the little islands Today I have now cycled on 10 islands .. with lots more to come tomorrow !
