In glorious July sunshine, eight slightly ill disciplined Loiterers opted to follow me (up to a point) on my carefully designed relatively flat ride in the Chilterns. Geoff, Dave, Alan, Tim, Noel, Robert, John Mac and John G stayed together as a group until the first coffee stop in Chorleywood, where one of our number rebelled and went off in search of an alternative beverage from a nearby outlet. Conversation over coffee resulted in a route variation to avoid one of the minor inclines that had been carefully selected for the ride. This resulted in the leader’s Garmin throwing a hissy fit and refusing to resume route finding for several miles. Geoff and Dave left after coffee, presumably in search of a hillier journey? The remaining magnificent seven continued to the quirky Red Lion in Little Missenden, where a pleasant lunch was enjoyed, indoors – to avoid the worst of the afternoon sun. Tim left at this point. Trees provided plenty of shade as we followed quiet lanes through some of the Chilterns’ finest arboreal landscape. An occasional stunning vista provided by gaps in the woodland led Alan to declare the route to be one of the finest. Modesty prevents me repeating the string of superlatives Alan dreamt up to describe the trip. Over coffee at Crumbs, a young waitress whose name resembled Sybil, looked bemused when asked about Fawlty Towers. The afternoon coffee stop ended with a further minor rebellion as yet another planned upward undulation was rejected in favour of a route where the contours were differently spaced. Another great day out with a fine group of cyclists.
