Historical Summary:
The route sits within the wider Apokoronas basin, an area defined by dispersed settlements, agricultural tracks, and interlocking ridgelines. These same ground characteristics are clearly visible on WWII British Army 1:50,000 Royal Engineers survey sheets produced by 512 Field Survey Company, and reflect a long-established pattern of movement based on access to fields, water, and seasonal grazing.
During the Battle of Crete in May 1941, this terrain formed part of the depth area east of Maleme, through which German forces extended their advance and Allied units withdrew south toward Sfakia. The absence of dominant road corridors and the presence of multiple track options created both opportunity and friction—movement was possible, but control was difficult.
During the occupation, the same network supported resistance activity. The combination of broken ground, vegetation cover, and scattered habitation allowed movement between villages while avoiding main routes. Tracks linking ridge to basin, rather than direct road movement, were a consistent feature of local knowledge and survival.
I left Kokkino Chorio at 09:00, climbing toward Kambia on firm mixed surface before dropping into the descent of the Four Hills Climb. The opening descent required controlled braking on loose stone over hardpack, with intermittent exposed rock. Line choice was constrained by surface movement rather than gradient alone.
St. Basil’s Track followed immediately, still affected by residual moisture in shaded sections. Rock slabs and compacted earth reduced grip, requiring steady input and avoidance of abrupt braking.
At Gavalochori, the regroup at 09:30 marked the transition into the basin structure. From here, the route moved onto linking tracks rather than a single defined line. Short climbs began to build—Climb 1 and 2—gradual, seated efforts establishing rhythm rather than forcing pace.
The movement toward Armeni followed shallow undulating ground, with Climb 3 extending across broken terrain. The surface alternated between compacted path and loose gravel, with small elevation losses interrupting the climb profile.

From Armeni, the route continued west-to-east across the basin floor before rising again. Climbs 4 and 5 were shorter but steeper, with loose material over firm base requiring controlled torque to maintain traction. These sections did not allow standing effort without wheel slip.
Climb 6 extended the line gradually, a longer shallow rise across agricultural ground. The track here matched clearly with the Royal Engineers mapping—non-linear, following field boundaries rather than direct alignment.
The central basin section flattened briefly before transitioning into the second half of the ride. Climbs 7 and 8 were short linking rises, maintaining elevation rather than gaining it significantly. Surface conditions remained mixed, with compacted soil broken by stone and intermittent erosion channels.
The final climb, Climb 9, formed the decisive effort. At 1.6 km with a maximum of 18.0%, it required sustained seated climbing with consistent cadence. The gradient increased in stages rather than continuously, forcing repeated adjustment in effort.
From the high point, the return toward the coastal line began. The descent phases were controlled rather than fast, with loose stone and uneven agricultural track limiting speed despite available gradient.
The final approach back toward Kokkino Chorio followed descending lines broken by short rises, maintaining the stepped character of the route until completion.
Across the full circuit, the alignment between the modern ride and the WWII Royal Engineers survey sheets is consistent. Tracks used today correspond closely to those recorded at 1:50,000 scale—linking ridgelines, avoiding direct exposure, and following practical access routes rather than engineered roads.
