Last night I awoke at midnight to the sound of a wild boar right beside my tent! With no service and no idea what to do, I rustled around a bit and I think he got the message and left. Whew!
I woke up at 5:45 as usual and made my way to the southern most point of mainland Japan, Cape Sata. The way there took a couple of hours and a couple of decent climb. Finally making it there, I parked my bike and took a nice stroll to as far as I was legally allowed to walk south. They've got a beautiful observatory overlooking the lighthouse island there. After my walk I ate the remnants of food that I had and headed back the way I came.
I took the eastern route back this time which was much more hilly and remote, but offered some gorgeous views. At one point I saw a cat hide from me by jumping into the drain. It then started pouring pretty heavily, so I got into all of my wet weather gear.
Soon I would be at a crossroads. I was out of food and about 200m above sea-level. I was getting hungry and the only way to get food was to descend down to sea-level for the only nearby shopping centre and stock up, just to climb back up the exact same road again. Or, I could push on over a 600m mountain where on the other side, multiple hours away there was a small family run grocery store. Already hungry, I decided not to be stupid and take the descent.
That's when the road provided.
Literally 100m before I took the turnoff, I ran into an old little shop that looked closed. I asked the man in the post office attached if the shop was open, and he said yes! He walked in there himself and let me shop. He counted each the price of each item so slowly and carefully put it in his calculator.
Now with some food in me I could skip that useless descent and climb and just head straight over the big mountain! By now I am absolutely soaked, but I had gotten used to these massive climbs. I must be getting a lot fitter. On the way up some construction workers cheered me on with that classic fist pump into the air that Japanese people love to do. "Osu!" I yelled back.
Passing the summit it was the perfect descent. Gradual and smooth, I never had to pedal and barely had to use my brakes. I also only smelt stinky cows once! I stopped at that little store at the bottom to stock up on food then head to the local onsen. Well, the onsen was closed of course so I just kept going towards the park I planned to camp at. On the way I stopped at a liquor store and asked to charge my phone, the phone charge actually went from 4% to 2% over 20 minutes so I unplugged the portable that was also charging, waited another 20 minutes till it got to 20%, then left the store cos I felt too awkward to stay any longer.
The park I decided to camp at had a no camping sign, but by then it was too late and it was only a tiny little sign on the toilets in Japanese so I pretended I couldn't read it and just set up my tent. The rain stopped exactly when I wanted to put my tent up as always and then I slept like a light.
