Wednesday 19th November. It's my Birthday, and I lead the long ride. There are only three of us. John Hare, John MacMillan and myself. Off through Iver Heath, past Pinewood, then straight down Framewood Road as far as Upton Lea, then briefly join the A412 to elevenses at Sainsburys, Slough. About to secure our bikes, one of the Johns notices what look like bike stands in the stairwell. Upon closer inspection they turn out to be trolley parks, so it's back to plan A. Dave Peck is already supping his tea by the time we get to the cafeteria.
After refreshments John Hare decides to leave us. I'm not sure if it's the hectic pace (surely not) or the distance to our lunch stop. So it's just John Mac and me heading for Brockhill. Off we go south through Eton College grounds, over the river, then part of what I believe to be Route 4, stopping short of Windsor Great Park. Through Clewer Green, then a zig zag to our lunch stop at Oak Tree Hill Garden Centre. The place is very popular with the over sixties on a Wednesday. The "grey" brigade can avail themselves of a 10% discount in the restaurant on production of a club card. Even without the discount, my ploughmans lunch was very reasonable, with so much cheese I had to take some home with me.
After our repast, John and I zig zag back to Fifield with clearing skies and sunshine. Onward past Monkey Island and the Jubilee River, through Upton and John turns left at the A4. I take the usual route home via Trenches and Iver Village. No dramas, no punctures! A very pleasant day.
Regards Bernie G.
