Big elevation day but absolutely smashed it! left my campsite around 8:30 after a lazy morning. Most of today was spent climbing, but the elevation gradient was so low and smooth that I kind of breezed through it compared to other days! I filled my water bottles from streams on the way and smelt the beautiful clean air. At the top of the first big summit, a man pulled over to give me some Lindt chocolate balls and a bottle of water. I couldn't say no even though I knew I was allergic to the chocolate! At the peak of the second summit a Kei ute pulled over and a man hopped out to chat. His name was Matsumoto Tarehiko and he was the ex-mayor of that mountain (and I assume surrounding towns). He showed me deers and boars he had hunted and told me how he had a niece living in Australia. Afterwards he gave me his business card (as many do in Japan) and gave me a chocolate, this time I could eat it! I took the downhill to the park I had planned to camp at, but the road had fully caved in due to a landslide. So instead I headed all the way down to the nearby town where I got wifi for the first time in over 24h. I used it to find the nearest 'Joyfull' chain restaurant (now a staple in my travels) to sit and do some planning while eating my dinner. I found a park nearby to sleep at and planned my route for tomorrow, which looks like it'll be a big one!
