Lei Day is a statewide celebration in Hawaii. The celebration begins in the morning of this date each year and continues into the next day. Lei day was established as a holiday in 1929. The festivities have consistently grown each year. Lei day was first held in the Courts and Town Halls but has since been moved to Kapi'olani park.
Each Hawaiian island has a different type of lei for its people to wear in the celebration. For example, I didn't know that the island of Kauai's lei is actually a type of fruit. These purple berries are strung around and leave a blossoming smell that can only be found on this island.
As always, lots more interesting detail on Wikipedia!

A last spin before the Wine Country Century tomorrow. Cool, 52 degrees at the start, but little wind. I tried to go even easier this time.
The Wine Country suggests century riders start at 7 a.m., and the after party ends at 5:30 p.m. On the century, if I average 11 mph, as I did on the metric century four days ago, it'll take me over nine hours to finish the century, not including rest stops. So I guess it's possible I'll finish before they donate the rest of the food. I might try to start a bit early. I'm planning to pick up my ride materials this evening.
