On 07/08/2012, JP Pettengill wrote First Lap made it over the climb at the front. On the way back a 3 man break got away and likely had around 40-50 second be the time we got back to the climb on lap 2. Lap 2 climb I moved to the front again and was able to make it into a 7 man group to chase back. Larry Nolan, Nabil S, Rob Anderson and others. We worked extremely hard except Nabil who was scolded like a school boy by Rob who told him to get off the back if he's not going to take a pull. When we rolled thorugh the start of Lap three they called out a 20 second gap. As we rolled up to the right hand turn onto 89 a car jumped out in front of us to make the right hand turn. I was caught in the wrong spot and had to brake really hard and down shift. My chain catcher did just that. It had moved and jammed my chain against the small chainring so I couldn't pedal it back on. I had to dismount and clear it so I'll never know if I could have held the pace on the third climb. I suspect not bacuse when I did it, I was a good 100 watts lower and couldn't bridge to two other riders. My back lower lumbar was really screaming and I couldn't imagine that I was only half way through the race. After getting some fuel in me and cheers from the folks at the start/finish I soldiered on for at least one more. Lap four was 2 min. slower than 3 which was 2 min. slower that the fast lap 2. At the top of the climb on lap four I saw my good friend Deacon S. and I knew then I would make it two more laps. Jude Mayne was the best, manning the climb and dumping cold water on me. As my pace dropped to a level my back could tollerate, I managed to roll through the start of my final lap knowing it would all be over in about 40 minutes. Sure enough the final lap took me 39:59 and I EARNED the Lantern Rouge (Last rider in). I ended up finishing 12th Overall. Great event. Can't wait to see what Bubba et. al. can grow this too for next year. ***
