It was an extremely hot day inspiring an earlier than usual start time. We set off without issues, as the temperature had not yet become overly oppressive. With a few shade stops we made our way to Wakefield and Lake Quannapowett. On the east side of the scenic lake the southwest breeze across the water was refreshing. Making our way to the entrance to the Breakheart Reservation through the parking lot of the Northeast Metropolitan Regional Vocational Technical School. With a choice of two route through the reservation, a handful of testosterone-powered cyclists opted for the hilly route, while the rest of us took the more sedate and also scenic path. We met up at the park headquarters and its facilities, where a kind stranger captured our photo. By this time the heat was getting to us. We left the park and headed up a steep hill toward a cut-through path. Halfway up the hill Tom's chain derailed leaving him without momentum and feet in clips. (FDGB! *) After another climb we had to stop and recover in the shade for a bit while a couple of riders feeling the heat. A flat suffered nearer the end was capably handled by Joy and her group of companions in the back. Eventually we all completed the ride without further incident. Thank you Joy for sweeping.
