Starting at St. Martin's church in Canterbury we walked to St Ethelburga's Well at Lyminge. Along the way we visited St. Mary's church at Patrixbourne, St. Peter's at Bridge, St. Gile's at KIngston and St. John the Baptist church at Barham. We followed the Nailbourne upstream when we got to Patrixbourne which was flowing at this point although it wasn't flowing much or at all after Barham.
We examined the fine bridge between Patrixbourne and Bridge, although the grand house it belonged to has long gone.
After a pint at The Mermaid and another at The Black Robin we continued on the path to Barham. Following the stream which generally floods the road here we crossed the Elham Valley road and took the path on this side of the valley with lovely views over the course of the stream and where the old railway line used to run down the valley.
At Elham we came down the hill to my Grandad's old place at North Elham and followed the stream into the main village.
Following the trail we walked on to Lyminge with a little detour at Ottinge.
At Lyminge we eventually found St. Ethelruda's Well which at one time was the source of dringing water for the village. A spring here is the reputed source of the Nailbourne but a number of small brooks converge here. She was a queen of Kent and eventually married the King of Northumbria, Edwin and helped bring Christianity to the north of England. After his death at the battle of Hatfield Chase she returned to Lyminge in Kent and founded a Nunnery. She died in 647 as is buried in the local church. This Saxon church (633) no longer exists but the site was excavated in 2019. A plaque in the church marks her burial place.
Several variations of the spelling of her name: Æthelburh of Kent (born c. 601,[1] sometimes spelled Æthelburg, Ethelburga, Æthelburga; Old English: Æþelburh, Æðelburh, Æðilburh, also known as Tate or Tata). She was the daughter of King Æthelberht of Kent (sometimes spelled Aethelberht) and his queen Bertha, and sister of Eadbald.
To get home we caught the bus back to Canterbury and sat upstairs looking at many of the places we'd passed on the way to Lyminge.
In town we had a few more beers in the Bell & Crown before getting the train home.
Along the way we examined some contemporay Stained Glass windows at the churches in Bridge and KIngston. The former was about 100 years old and depicted many scenes from Bridge that we could recognise: the river, the bridges, the railway and the big houses. Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, the motor car, was even on it! The one at Kingston was about 50 years old and simpler although very charming and colourful.
