I left the house as soon as the rain stopped, prepared for more rain along the way throughout the day. I took my commuter bike on this ride, my old cyclocross bike with fast road tires. Also fenders. Didn't run into any rain until Woodbury and through the Cove. Heavy thick clouds dominated all morning and it was extremely humid air as expected.
As I left Peachtree City the wind was pretty stiff in my face. Thankfully it tapered off or was blocked pretty well by the trees for the next several hours.
I planned on taking only pavement on this route and took several state highways and most were almost completely deserted. So the ride was very fast, and I was in very good spirits when I stopped for the first time in Ellaville. I stocked up to only stop one more time.
Not too much further down the road I rode through Andersonville and the park, which to my surprise was pretty much a breeze. There didn't appear to be any restrictions on bikes and no fee at all. So I did a little loop through and headed out. The highway nearby was much busier than all the others on the day which was jarring. And hilly too but thankfully I wasn't on it very long.
After Andersonville storms began gathering and riding beside huge fields made them visible for miles around. I kept on catching the edge and getting rained on but not very wet.
I rode a couple of long dead ends out to Lake Blackshear which were lovely riding. The wind was still blowing from the southwest fairly strong. I popped out to highway 280 to cross the river and lake. I had planned to stop on the Crisp side at a store but since there was a brand new store right there in Sumter I stopped there for the last time.
Upon reaching the bridge I could see dark clouds raining off in the distance over Cordele. It took awhile until on the edge of town that I got dumped on briefly. This finally was enough to soak me but it stopped after a few minutes.
There were other storms around and the wind had shifted to northeast and so was a direct headwind. So the remaining miles through town and across to Rochelle were slow. I did a few extra streets along the way and one last subdivision in Crisp while a big storm rained on me as the pavement ran out and I continued on to complete the loop around despite this. The remaining miles I followed a huge storm that was just ahead of me dropping extremely heavy rain just ahead of me and continued to fuel my headwind. But despite all that it was my fastest 200+ mile ride i've done probably not least because I rode all pavement.
