Last night’s stay with Tamás and his family was so great, I’ll never forget it. He built an addition to the house of local red sandstone where his wife makes willow baskets, and the willow scent is so nice! They also built wood-fired ovens to heat the rooms. Tamás made dinner with peppers, eggs, and sausage that reminded me of mom’s stuffed peppers. We had local organic wine, and I stopped by the Skrabski winery on my ride to get another bottle for the road. I also filled my water bottles at a spring in Balatonudvari, which tastes great- high in iron and carbonated. Half of the bike paths along the north shore of Lake Balaton were pretty narrow and in bad shape, so it made for slow progress. Tamás had me read Mark Twain’s essay on the German language and I especially liked the part about the Fishwife with all the confusing gendered pronouns. I’m staying tonight at Nussbaum Panzió.
