Frederick George Fisher Jr. was born in Massachusetts in 1921. He graduated summa cum laude from Bowdoin College in 1942, served in the Army Signal Corps during World War II, graduated Harvard Law School in 1948, and joined the law firm of Hale and Dorr in Boston.
In 1954, Hale and Dorr sent him to Washington, D.C. to assist Joseph Welch to represent the U.S. Army in the Army–McCarthy hearings on Senator Joseph McCarthy's conduct. During vetting, Welchlearned Fisher had belonged to the National Lawyers Guild while in law school, a left-wing association, and so replaced Fisher with a colleague.
In the hearings, on this date in 1954, McCarthy intimated on national television that Welch should fire Fisher as a Communist, and that Welch had specifically chosen him for the hearings. Welch defended Fisher and attacked McCarthy for naming the young man before a nationwide television audience without prior warning or previous agreement to do so. "... I have never really gauged your cruelty or your recklessness. ... I fear he shall always bear a scar needlessly inflicted by you."
McCarthy persisted. Welch famously responded, "Have you no sense of decency, sir? At long last, have you left no sense of decency?"
The gallery erupted in applause. Months later, the Senate censured McCarthy and replaced him as chair of the Subcommittee on Investigations. McCarthy continued his anti-communist oratory, often speaking to an empty Senate chamber. Turning increasingly to alcohol, McCarthy died of hepatitis four years later at the age of 48.
Fisher went on to become a partner at Hale and Dorr. In 1973–74, he served as president of the Massachusetts Bar Association. He died in 1989 while lecturing in Tel Aviv.

I joined the B ride today. I was able to keep up with their pace, mostly. They did good regroups.
I left the Bs when they headed up Mountain View. I went downhill back to CCC instead. Nice, easy ride, with a solid average speed.
