East of Otorohanga lies one of the Waikato's quiet gems — a 50km loop of sealed back-country road that wraps itself around the meandering Waipā River. With barely a vehicle in sight, smooth tarmac underfoot, and rolling green farmland stretching out in every direction, this is the kind of ride that lets you breathe out, settle into a rhythm, and simply enjoy being on the bike. (Keep as far left as you can all the same — courtesy costs nothing.)
The beauty of this route? Once you're rolling, you barely need to think. Every turn is a right turn. So clear your head, and let the road do the navigating.
You'll set off from the Otorohanga NZMCA Park, easing onto the stop-bank trail that traces the river's edge — a gentle warm-up with the Waipā for company. Where the trail ends, turn right onto Rangiatea Road and settle in for kilometres of easy, undulating countryside, the kind of terrain that flatters your legs and keeps the scenery moving.
Turn right onto Lurman Road, and at the 16km fork, stay right — here's where the ride earns its keep. The one true climb of the day rises ahead of you, a steady ascent that pays you back in full with an exhilarating downhill rush on the far side. Wind in your ears, river valley spread below — this is the moment you came for.
At the 20km mark you'll reach Paewhenua: turn right. Seven kilometres on, right again onto Maihihi Road, then right at 29km onto Tauraroa Valley Road, before swinging right onto Otewa Road.
At the 31km point comes the perfect reward — the Waipā River crossing. Just before the bridge there's a quiet side spot to pull over, unwrap a snack, and on a warm day, slip down for a cooling dip in the river. Few rides offer a swimming hole at the two-thirds mark.
From here, the road carries you all the way home to Otorohanga. Turn right at the railway over-bridge, cross the Waipā one last time, and swing right along the path back onto the stop-bank trail — one final right turn to deliver you home to where it all began.
The numbers: 50km · roughly 2-3hrs riding · sealed road throughout · one real climb · endless quiet · a river that's never far away.
