Started out with a trip through the Lava Beds National Monument. Very nice scenery and road. We then entered the Modoc National forest which was very remote an beautiful with a little rougher pavement but not bad ride up to Medicine Lake Campground. Took a little extra riding to find potable water at the ranger station several miles up the road. Good thing I did because there was no water in Dana and it was near 100F. We both used all our water and I was carrying 140 oz which we shared. I really like the two fork mounted 48 oz insulated bottles. We made it to McArthur an restocked with water. should have eaten there but Eric suggested we eat in Hat Creek but there was no place to get food or water. I wasted 2 hours looking for water/food not knowing what my options would be climbing over Lassen at night. I stopped at a KOA and the restaurant had just closed. The cook heard me explaining my situation to the cashier and 5 minutes later offered to make me a plate of rice and beans and wouldn't let me pay for it. a true act of kindness. It gave me the energy to continue climbing. Was packing a lot of trail mix but it takes a while to digest.
when I entered Lassen National Park it said 13 miles to Summit Lake and the pass height is 8597'. When I got to Summit Lake I was only at 6600' for the the 3rd time realized I had another 9 miles of climbing. I ended up bonking at around 7500' and having some pulmonary issues with the altitude. I kept seeing figures on horses walking along side me while riding. I ended up stopping and eating a bunch of tail mix and laid on the ground to feel the warmth of the asphalt while staring up a sky full of stars. I contemplated sleeping for a few hours but decided to press on after I felt a little bit better. It was very cold descending the back side at 3 am. It took me almost a half hour to put my warm clothes on in the disoriented state I was in but by the time I started back down I was able to think much clearer. I arrived at the hotel right around 6 am which was the time we were supposed to leave for Day 3. I contemplated showering and heading back out but my clothes where never picked up from the post office by the hotel. I ended up renting the room for the next night and they washed my clothes for me while I slept. Woke up at 3 pm famished. Had a GREAT meal at Asian's Mediterranean Grill. A nice Turkish couple, great food. Felt like being in Istanbul again.
I decided to use my elevation gain wisely and head downhill rather than traverse over to Reno. Headed downhill to Oroville the next morning .
