I love a little quote, brings out the wordsmith in me, more like an industrial blacksmith, least I try that’s what my ever positive Mums says. While I am reminiscing happy 40th anniversary to Billy and Tina Plews, hope you have a great night down on Dover seafront tonight, Bingo and I will raise a glass for you both, great couple and family.
Well gone all misty eyed now, probably a bit of suncream in my eyes! as we quietly left the surfer dude apartment, you can imagine Bing & I trying to be stealthy quiet, as the surfers dream of catching the big one, me bumping into every unmovable object, as I tried to get down as much porridge as possible.
Still no one stirred as we crept out onto the deserted streets – just us and the bin men out – both doing a worthwhile jobs, theirs so much more important, but they gave us a great wave and thumbs up, as we sped through the deserted town, surf boards standing up like a gothic symbol, itching to be used when the dudes wake up from their slumber. Mate I pushed them hard yesterday with their laid back curls, too tired to get off their fat arses, that’s what Bingo said, I just giggled and agreed.
Anyway lets get on to some proper cycling works, quite difficult when I keep laughing to myself, soon had to pull into gear, as we are hitting the low Pyrenees, just lots of short sharp climbs, testing the calf muscles just a tadge. Still keeping to the cycle lanes as much as we can, up over cliffs then back to the coast, bit overcast so keeping cool, both in temperature and wellbeing. First little impromptu stop on the side of the road, had an orange and a chocolate bar, in the most nosiest fashion possible, just finishing off the breakfast.
Full steam ahead now pumping the legs filling up with air, feel on top of the world, just in a little daydream period again, when we came around a tight corner, Bingo shouting at me, we need to be on that bridge, tranquillo mate, we can sort it, just around the corner a lift to take us up the cliff, these routes don’t just happen, they have divine intervention, me with a grin like a Cheshire cat, Bingo just gives me a deadly stare, but low and behold we are on the bridge.
Just get over that little escapade, on the bridge, just past 11:00 in the morning Bingo says well we are in Spain, well I know what that means got to have a beer on the border. never one to do odd numbers so had two, before we went on our merry way through the famous Basque region of Spain full of iconic Spanish riders and two Aylesham lads, smiling and cheering as we go through.
Fuelled with an extra early beer, we sped off, the little steep climbs soon sorted the beer, it’s the food of gods, well that’s what I say, as we take on all the Basque climbs with consummate ease, these touring bikes working their socks off, as we powered through hilly countryside, knowing we had a one little climb to do before we sweep into Zarautz and yes it was a steep little climb, engaging all the sinews in these old legs, only muscles not working is the smile ones, no need to worry they will be doing their business tonight.
All done lovely old world town Zarautz, twirled around the centre like two demented scarecrows until we found the Air B&B hiding in the plethora of buildings, all good then the mammoth task of getting the bikes in the lift with all the bags, you would think we would be good at this my now.
All showered and washed, out for a lovely meal in a back street bar, great service and lovely ambiance, just left as the crescendo of noise from all the bystanders was echoing around the old town.
Time for bed for the two old gits.
