After being totally spoilt at Hotel Bufón de Arenillas, Carinas was an absolute jewel, waiting on two weary cyclist hand and foot, obviously I took it to the extreme, fair play, she went the extra mile, so good, I left a lovely message in Carina’s guest book.
We are both two weary lads, feeling it a bit after 14 days on the road, so plan is to take it easy for the next couple of days, just little 50 milers, the heat and terrain has taken its toll, hence the rest day heaven!
Two crazy fools still up at six, eating the well prepared breakfast Carina had so kindly set up for us, just waiting for the light to break, sunrise not until just after 06:30, we are like two coiled springs ready for the off.
Reaaxed start no – climbs for around 20 miles then a few big hitters, ready for a nice descent into Villaviciosa, you know its going to be ok, when we constantly following a rickety old railway line, with a bit of the ED input he advises us its the ” FEVE 1000mm gauge line that runs along the northern Spanish coast, slow and infrequent service, but cheap as chips” bit like us two muckers. Enjoying the early morning chill and quiet roads, blissfully pushing the early miles, before the sun rises.
Smashed out the first 20 miles with ease, stopped for a coffee and soft drink in Ribadesella, just a roadside cafe, enjoying the ambiance of the principality of Asturias, watching the world go by, with a lovely sense of tranquillity, enough of that Namby-pamby stuff, get on with the cycling.
On we go breezing through the idyllic roads, down a twisty-turny descent, sure their is a better word for that, but suits me, into the coastal village of Ribadesella, too nice a place to not stop, so had another coffee, that’s me hypo now. Great chat with a some guys from the West Midlands, father and sons, once again waxing lyrical about all our little trips, they loved it, but it was not getting us much further along the road. Both the sons saying it’s a massive climb out of the village, climb yes but not massive, done with ease, especially with all that coffee spinning around my head.
Just keep a steady pace up, going through the climbs like they are not there! for once, steady away, both looking forward to an early finish, maybe a little siesta then watch England tonight, not holding out much luck for that, but you never know.
Finished the last of the day, nice little descent into Villaviciosa, with the usual hydration stop a few miles out, quirky little bar full of mad locals and two guys from Aylesham blending in well.
Think the whistleblowers are out in force, the hotel manager waiting on the steps to greet us, with a smiles and loads of Asturias hospitality, gave us directions to ride the bikes up to the first floor, Bingo did not look impressed, but sure enough we did, all booked in with ease.
Bingo sorted lunch out from the local supermarket, rolls and lovely cheese, hotel provided the plates and utensils, we are living the life of superstars.
Blog done few beers, then siesta time.
