A pretty standard way to cross the Brenner Pass. We used alternative roads as much as possible to avoid the main federal road. There are some nice, newly paved sections along the way, so there is hope that a dedicated, bike-only path for crossing the Brenner will exist one day. However, for now, from St. Jodok am Brenner up to the pass itself, you still have to cycle on the road. We rode on a weekday morning, and the amount of traffic was very manageable.
There are plenty of places to catch your breath and relax on the Brenner itself, and once you cross the pass, the route is an absolute dream: a dedicated cycle path through a beautiful landscape with perfect tarmac. Be aware that before the descent to Gossensaß/Colle Isarco, the road signs can be quite confusing, so just follow your navigation.
Sterzing/Vipiteno is a beautiful, historic town with plenty of opportunities to rest and resupply – we ate at Angolo Focacceria, and oh my, it was amazing! From there, you will follow the main bike path toward Brixen/Bressanone.
Attention: Our track before Brixen/Bressanone follows a detour due to a road construction closure, so keep an eye out for the local signs when you are on the route. Overall, the segment is nice and not too demanding, but the main section to watch out for is the last 9 kilometers along the busy highway before the Brenner Pass.
